Product photography tips for e-commerce sellers

Slow-loading product images kill conversions. Every extra second of load time costs you 7% in sales. Here's how to optimize your Shopify images.

Recommended image dimensions

Shopify's recommended product image size is 2048 x 2048 pixels in square format. This provides enough resolution for zoom while maintaining fast load times. Shopify automatically generates smaller variants for thumbnails and mobile.

File format and compression

Upload in JPEG for photos (products, lifestyle shots) and PNG only when you need transparency. Shopify converts images to WebP automatically for browsers that support it. Keep your source files under 5 MB — Shopify's max is 20 MB but larger files slow processing.

Alt text for SEO

Every product image should have descriptive alt text. Instead of "IMG_4523.jpg", use something like "Blue cotton t-shirt front view — men's casual wear." This helps Google Images index your products and improves accessibility.

Consistent aspect ratios

Use the same aspect ratio (ideally square 1:1) across all products. Mixed ratios make your collection pages look messy. Lumipic outputs square 2000x2000 images by default, matching Shopify's sweet spot.

Number of images per product

Shopify supports up to 250 images per product, but the sweet spot is 5-8 per product: main shot, back view, detail close-up, lifestyle/context, size comparison, and packaging.
